2026 DIY Lash Trends: Cluster Lashes with Glue vs. Self-Adhesive Clusters vs. Magnetic Lashes

The world of eyelashes has undergone a small revolution over the last decade. While achieving beautiful, thick lashes once almost always meant a trip to a lash technician, today the market is filled with DIY lash options that promise professional results without stepping foot in a salon.

I have been involved in the lash world for about 20 years now. I started as a lash technician, but today I am more of a DIY lash enthusiast who has tried virtually every self-application lash variant available in the world.

In this post, I will provide an honest and practical overview of the three most popular options:

  • Cluster lashes applied with glue

  • Self-adhesive cluster lashes

  • Magnetic lashes

We’ll look at their pros, cons, and suitability for different users so you can make an informed buying decision.

Magnetic Lashes – Social Media Favorite, But What About Real Life?

You see magnetic lashes everywhere today: Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook. Advertisements promise they are ultra-fast, simple, and perfect for beginners. Unfortunately, personal experience shows a slightly different picture.

Cons of magnetic lashes based on my experience:

  1. Limited wear time: They can be worn for a maximum of about 12 hours. Sleeping in them is not recommended, as the magnets can irritate the eyelid and the lashes may shift.

  2. Standard length doesn't fit everyone: Most magnetic lashes come in one fixed length. But our eyelid lengths vary. Often, you need to trim them, but here lies the problem: magnets are placed at the ends, and cutting them off ruins the functionality.

  3. Clunky lash band and large magnets: Many magnetic lashes are made on a wide, stiff band. This can feel uncomfortable, heavy, and look visually unnatural.

  4. Natural lashes must be coated in mascara: I always recommend applying mascara to your natural lashes before applying magnetic ones.

    • ✔️ This helps them stay in place better.

    • ❌ However, it means the magnetic lash band gets dirty with mascara.

  5. Reuse becomes inconvenient: Mascara stains the band and the magnets, making them difficult to clean and shortening their lifespan.

  6. Application isn't actually that easy: Even with a special applicator, magnetic lashes require practice. If you have very short natural lashes (like I do), placing them precisely with an applicator can be nearly impossible.

👉 If you still want to try magnetic lashes, I recommend the Finnish brand Miraque for their quality—their lashes are truly among the best on the market.

Self-Adhesive Cluster Lashes – Quick but Limited Solution

Self-adhesive clusters have gained popularity recently, especially among those who are afraid to use lash glue.

Pros:

  • ✔️ Very fast application

  • ✔️ No separate glue needed

  • ✔️ Suitable for short-term wear

Cons:

  • ❌ Short retention, often only a few hours

  • ❌ The sticky surface collects dirt and quickly loses its tackiness

  • ❌ Does not handle moisture, tears, or oily eyelid skin well

  • ❌ Not suitable for multi-day wear

  • The adhesive strip is often too thick: In many brands, the pre-applied strip is noticeably thicker than on glue-applied clusters. This makes application uncomfortable, especially when placing them under your natural lashes, and the result can look stiff and unnatural.

  • Do not blend with natural lashes: The thicker strip prevents the cluster from blending seamlessly. It can create a sensation that the lashes are "hanging" under the lash line rather than "growing" naturally from it.

  • Must be used soon after opening: While high-quality self-adhesive lashes are originally airtight, the clock starts ticking the moment you open the pack. The self-adhesive glue reacts with air, and over time (we're talking just weeks), the adhesive properties decrease significantly.

Self-adhesive clusters can be a good choice for an event or a quick evening out, but for daily use, they often fall short.

👉 There is one very good exception I have tried and dare to recommend: the Korean brand KKong Lash. Their self-adhesive clusters are significantly lighter and softer with an ultra-thin adhesive strip that fits the eye shape better.

Cluster Lashes Applied with Glue – The Most Flexible and Professional Result

Glue-applied clusters are my personal favorite and the reason why many former salon clients have switched to at-home DIY lashes.

Pros:

  • ✨ Very natural result

  • ✨ Can be customized exactly to your eye shape

  • ✨ Last for several days

  • ✨ No mascara needed

  • ✨ Lightweight and comfortable to wear

  • ✨ Suitable even for short natural lashes

The clusters are applied under your natural lashes, which makes the result discreet and professional-looking.

Cons:

  • ➖ Require a bit of practice for the first few times

  • ➖ Require special glue and remover

However, this small learning curve quickly pays off because the result is salon-like, but much more efficient in terms of time and money.

Summary: Which Lashes to Choose?

If you are looking for...

  • A quick fix for one evening → Self-adhesive cluster lashes

  • A trendy solution with compromises → Magnetic lashes

  • The most natural, long-lasting, and customizable result → Cluster lashes applied with glue

Based on my experience, DIY cluster lashes applied with glue are currently the smartest choice for a woman who wants beautiful lashes without visiting a lash technician.
